  Vacation – Home Security System

Vacation – Home Security System

Summer traditionally coincides with vacations. Although gas prices have kept many people closer to home, hotels and resorts are offering incentives for those willing to travel.

Traveling can be a hassle. You put a lot of thought and energy into your home security system before leaving on vacation, but what about your security when you are on vacation?

It’s critical to have the proper and trust worthy home security system in place before going on vacation. Our home security experts recommend installing an ADT home security system before going on vacation so you can rest easy and night.

Before you leave, research where you will be going. Has there been a lot of crime in the area recently? Be sure to let someone know where you will be staying and how to contact you. Make copies of your drivers license, passport, credit cards and any other personal information that may be needed to locate you in case of an emergency. Also, if something is stolen, you can identify yourself to cancel or replace the item.

Your hotel is your home away from home; your sanctuary. Therefore it is imperative that you make intelligent choices when choosing your lodging and how you behave there.

Decades ago there was a large surge in building motels, lodging with access to the rooms from the parking lot. This design was created to be more convenient for loading and unloading the car. For safety reasons, this design is not longer popular. This does not mean you should necessarily avoid motels. Instead, use good judgment when you check in. As you pull up, look for home security cameras or a security guard. These will deter criminals from this property. At check in, be weary of staying at any property that does not use electronic key cards. They are safer because if someone walks off with the key, they are programmed to deactivate at the designated check out time. Although motels that use “real” keys are supposed to re-key or rotate the locks when a key goes missing, there is no way to ensure this precaution has been taken.

When you’re in the room, make sure the room is secure. There should be a deadbolt to keep anyone out that may have a key you don’t want to enter. Also, there should be a latch on the door. Chains are sufficient as long as they are properly installed. This device allows you to partially open the door without allowing access to the room. There should be a peep hole as well.

These initial steps can make the difference in making your home away from home secure.
