Alabama and Safety: An Overview
The State of Alabama is found on the southern part of the United States with the state of Georgia to its east, Tennessee to its north, Mississippi to its West, and the Gulf of Mexico and Florida to its south. Alabama is said to have around 4.6 million residents (year 2006). Its focus is on the following industries: health care, banking, aerospace, automobile manufacturing, steel production, etc. It is known as the “Yellowhammer State” named after the state bird. Alabama’s largest city is Birmingham and its capital is Montgomery.
If you are interested in touring Alabama, then the best spot is Birmingham as it is the entertainment capital as well as cultural hot spot of Alabama. Art lovers will delight in the fact that there are various art galleries such as the Birmingham Museum of Art which is the biggest art museum in Alabama. If you love dance then a visit to Birmingham would not be complete without taking a look at the state’s major opera, ballet and symphony orchestra companies like the Birmingham Ballet, Alabama Ballet, Birmingham Concert Chorale, Opera Birmingham, Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival and many more.
However, you should learn to be extra careful while walking and visiting Birmingham as crime is really a big problem in the said city. There have been a large increase in murder rates in the past few years up to the present and rumors say that the mayor of the city has not really done a great job in gaining control over crime. Out of all the cities in the US, Birmingham is among the top 20 in violent crime and holds the number seven spot in terms of highest murder rate.
A lot of the violence and crime are said to not only happen in Birmingham homes but also in homes throughout the state of Alabama. Burglary is the cup of tea of the criminals and Alliance Security Corporation, one of the known companies that cater to home security in Alabama advises that high shrubs should be avoided as those would serve as a way of burglars to conceal themselves. As for house locks, it is best to use double key action dead bolts and if you have the funds, try having high technology security systems installed such as motion sensors and keypads that would immediately alert the police with just the press of a button. Safety should be given priority in Alabama especially in the city of Birmingham.
