West Virginia Home Security
The state of West Virginia is a small, mountainous state in the eastern United States. It covers an area of 62,759 square kilometers. Charleston is West Virginia’s capital and largest city. West Virginia has few areas of level ground. The Blue Ridge Mountains touch the easternmost tip of the state. The rest of the state’s eastern border lies within the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. Spruce Knob, the state’s highest point, rises 1,482 meters in the region’s Allegheny Mountains. The Appalachian Plateau covers the western portion of West Virginia. Narrow valleys, flat-topped uplands, and rounded hills make up the plateau’s rugged surface.
The history of the state started when American Indians lived in West Virginia before Europeans settled in the area. In the early 1600’s, the area became part of the English colony of Virginia. German settlers from Pennsylvania established a settlement at New Mecklenburg (now Shepherdstown) in 1727. In relation to its economy, the decline of such industries as glass and steel led to widespread unemployment in the state. Although coal mining has also declined in importance, it is still among the most important economic activities in West Virginia. About three-fourths of West Virginia’s workers are employed in service industries, which include finance, trade and government. Knowing for a fact that human living problems (poverty, unemployment, graft and corruption, etc.) trigger a lot of heinous crimes, it is very evident with the 2006 statistic reports.
West Virginia State reached a 1,818,470 population size, a little increase of 4,387 from the previous year. During the year 2000, it was on the 37th place population size among all the other states of the United States of America. Some depressed and uneducated individuals result to doing crimes as their solution to cope up with human problems. Records show that the state had a Crime Index Rate of 2,901 incidents per 100,000 individuals, a little lower count than the previous year which was considered to be the highest count in ten years since the year 1996.
There are 280 incidents of Violent Crime Rate and is composed of 4 Murder incidents, 21 Forced Rape incidents, 47 Robbery incidents and 207 Aggravated Assault incidents. There are also 2,622 incidents for the Property Crime Rate and is composed of 634 incidents of Burglary, 1,772 incidents of Larceny Theft and 216 incidents of Vehicle Theft. West Virginia became the 35th state of the United States on June 20, 1863.
