| Let’s face it: not all women are good judges of character. And not all men are good. Sadly, the nightly news in every town has at one time or another told the story of a relationship gone bad and the boyfriend breaks into the girl’s home and sometimes does some really bad things.
Situations such as these are what make movie magic at the box office. Sadly, real life has yet to fail to give new stories for the tabloids and movies.
We can’t run FBI background checks on everyone we meet to make sure they aren’t a criminal; therefore you have to be smart about how much you let someone in. All too often, these couples on the news had not known each other long before one was giving money to the other or moving in together.
When one invests so much time and money into their home, whether it is an apartment, a condo, or house, I cannot understand how it can be risked by allowing a stranger to have access. Just last week, a man used the keys he stole from his girlfriend’s house to gain access when she was not home and robbed her of her belongings. A worse tale is that of another man who made a copy of the key he had been given and after the break up, went back and attacked the woman.
These tales allow for the rest of us to learn from their mistakes. First of all, don’t give out a key to your house to someone you’re dating! That should seem like common sense. However, all too often people are giving out keys to their home. Second, if it becomes known that someone has a key to your home, re-key the house. The best thing one can do is to install a home security system and to NEVER give out the home security system access codes. More advanced home security systems allow you to give each user their own code to arm and disarm the home security system. This allows you to monitor who is entering and leaving your home with a home security system and when. Also, if someone leaves your life, you can cancel out their access code. This way, if an ex tries to re-enter your life without your permission, you have the control to deny their access.
Perhaps if the women in those news stories had taken these steps to protect themselves, they would be safe and happy today. Now we need to learn from their mistakes and make sure we keep ourselves safe.
