Home Security Systems - Guns

While it is arguable that there are “bad” gun owners in the world, there are also many “good” gun owners. Guns can be used for recreation such as hunting or skeet shooting. They can be collector items. They can also be used for personal protection. No matter its purpose, being a gun owner is a huge responsibility. When a family is included in the equation, a gun can be a liability. That is why every responsible gun owner I know (I know many) own a gun safe.

A gun safe is like any other safe, in that it limits the access of its contents to anyone who is not entitled thereto. Gun safes can be small enough to secure a small hand gun, or they can be larger than a person, more like a room. They can be portable like a briefcase, or they can be built into a home like a panic room.

home security system - gun storage

A gun safe differs from other safes in that they contain special racks for the proper storage of a gun. The most effective and safest safes contain a separate locked compartment for ammunition. A gun should never be stored armed, nor should it be easy to load a gun. For this reason, most guns in a home are not effective protection against an intruder. These gun safes are designed more for the recreational user.

home security system and gun protection

Someone owning a gun for home security protection should use a safe that is more like a small fireproof safe. It should still be locked at all times and the gun should never be loaded. However, the gun can easily be stored in a closet or under the bed and easily obtainable in an emergency. However, during the time it would take to obtain the gun, and properly load it, emergency personnel could have been called. You are now also giving the intruder access to a loaded firearm.

Does a gun replace the need for a home security system? Actually it doesn’t you really need to protect your home when your not home. An intruder is more likely to break into your home when you not home. It’s actually really unlikely that an intruder would make an attempt to break into your home while your there. A home security system can contact the authorities for your whether your are in the home or not. Using a gun to protect your family when you are there is an option but you will be forced to load it or call the authorities, you really can do both at the same time. Installing a home security system with monitoring is the best why to protect your family.

The biggest fear I hear from gun owners is that a child will try to access the gun safe. There are many ways to prevent this. First, get a gun safe that uses a key code and do not allow the children access to this code. Do not use a code that would be easy for the children to guess like anniversary or birth dates. You can also purchase Bio-Metric safes that use your fingerprints to open the safe. This is very high-tech and will also prevent a thief from gaining access to your firearm. If the safe uses a key, make sure the key’s access is secure. Do not leave the key someone a snooping child can find it.

It is important to keep your house secure from intruders, and it is equally important to keep those inside your home protected from them selves. While each state differs in their gun owning laws, it is important to take every step available to ensure all guns are safely away from anyone not able or trained to use them correctly.
