Home Security Tips And Tricks

home security tips and tricks, home security, crime rate, lowest crime rate, burglarproof home, alarm system, Law Enforcement

According to he state crime rankings released by CQ Press in its “Crime State Rankings 2009” report, New Hampshire rated as the state with the lowest crime rate in the United States. Now while thins would make many people feel safe, in fact that safety is an illusion. In keeping with today’s jobless rate, and struggling economy, burglaries and home invasions are steadily rising. In such troubled times it would be prudent for the homeowner to learn a few home security tips and tricks.

While it is true that there is no such thing as a burglarproof home, there is no reason to make it easy for them. Just a few home security tips and tricks can make all the difference between keeping your hard earned possessions, and becoming another statistic.

According to the New Hampshire State Law Enforcement Uniform Crime Report burglaries have steadily risen from 1,108 in 1960, to 4,286 by 2008. Property crimes, (including home invasion), rose from 4,105 to 27,526 within the same time period. Remember that New Hampshire is ranked as the lowest crime state, and it is easy to see why a few home security tips and tricks could come in handy for the average homeowner.

Two things that almost every burglar, except the most novice, will consider when choosing a home to rob are time, and undue attention. One of the easiest of home security tips and tricks is to take extra steps to safe guard those areas of your home that are not visible to the general public. This can range from planting natural barriers, such as thorny rose bushes, under the most venerable windows to safety coating them. This makes entry into your home much harder for the would be thief.

Other simple home security tips and tricks that you can take are to obtain and close heavy drapes. While thin, sheer curtains certainly look fashionable they allow a thief to “case” your home much more easily. They can see with relative ease whether or not you actually do have a dog, or an alarm system, in place. It is a common practice for a burglar to simply walk up to a window to see if you have anything worth stealing.

When considering what home security tips and tricks are the most cost effective many people, believe it, or not, will over look the least expensive and easiest to do. Get a dog. Remember that a burglar’s best friends are speed, and not attracting undue attention. Whether the dog is an inside, or outside dog, all most all but the most inexperienced burglar will avoid homes that have dogs. Dog bark, and neighbors look. There are far easier targets for a thief than a home with an automatic siren barking in the yard.

One of the most important of the home security tips and tricks to do is to purchase a simple engraving tool, (most cost little more than $20.00), and engrave your name and address on your valuables. Copy the serial numbers, and provide a copy to law enforcement, then make a sign, or sticker to prominently display, letting the thief know you have taken this step. Burglars want items that are easy to fence, and no one they deal with wants merchandise that can easily be traced to them. That’s a quick trip to the prison showers, and they know it. You, in effect, make your property worthless to the would be thief.
