Sleeping Well with Home Security Systems

We have often heard the saying: “To catch a thief, think like a thief.” This applies to burglars too. The best protection against burglars is for you to think like a burglar and think of ways on how a potential burglar can break into your home. This mental toughness is the state of mind you should have before buying home security systems. This way, you will be able to think through what are the most important areas in the house that need protection to minimize costs and optimize the defense. Areas which are particularly vulnerable like the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom should be prioritized when installing home security systems.

Home alarm systems, with regards to control panels, come in three types. The first is the old but reliable hardwired system where almost no maintenance is required but this has little flexibility. The second type is the wireless (self-contained) which as the name implies requires no wirings. Easily installed, wireless home security systems are a bit costly but flexible when you are renovating homes. The third type is the hybrid which represents the best of both worlds in home security systems. They are relatively cheaper and greater flexibility while at the same time while requiring little maintenance.

The heart of most home security systems is the motion detector (sensor) that detects movement no matter how slight. This works on the principle of beaming invisible infrared rays (usually termed as PIR or passive infrared detection because the light beams are focused in one direction only as opposed to an active one in which the sensor sweeps the covered area in a left-to-right motion). For this to work properly, the motion sensor of home security systems must be adjusted also to the ambient temperature of the room or the area where it is installed.

There is also home security systems designed to detect the breaking of glass. This is not so well known among homeowners and even less well known to burglars. This feature often trips them up and catches them red-handed because they expect home security systems to focus on detecting movements. It does the detection by the noting the particular type of vibration generated by glass breaking.

Perhaps another feature of home security systems is the fire and smoke detection alarm. This is especially useful when people are fast asleep at night and the idea is to detect the smoke that goes before a fire breaks out in full intensity. This will give people enough time to either try to put out the fire or get out quickly before everything turns into an inferno. Most severe injuries or fatalities during home fires are caused by smoke inhalation. For those who are lucky to survive, massive smoke will cause permanent damage to the lungs. The people who succumbed during fires are those who had the bad luck to have inhaled too much smoke and cannot see their way out as smoke gets in their eyes. So a good security system protects against intrusion by deterrence and against fires by early detection.
