| My favorite place in the whole world is probably my back yard (I’ve never seen the whole world to know for sure). No where else do I feel safer or have I made more great memories than in that yard. Last summer that was almost taken from me.
I live on the edge of town and have enjoyed the paradox of city and country life. We enjoy the quiet life but enjoy knowing that neighbors are close enough that they can come running in an emergency. One night I got home from work a bit late. I pulled up the driveway and noticed movement in the back yard. The movement was far enough away from the motion sensor controlled light by the back door so the light wasn’t turning on to allowing me to see who or what was in the yard. I could hear, though, the barking of my dog in his kennel along the side of the house. I could tell something was not right and I became frightened. I decided to enter the house from the front door rather than go near the back yard. When I was in the safety of my home, I went to the back door and turned on the flood lights to the back yard. Suddenly I was terrified by the sight that I could then see: three coyotes in the yard, looking at my dog in his kennel as though he were dinner.

I didn’t know what I could do to scare them away. I didn’t want to exit the safety of the house for fear that they may attack me instead. I knew I couldn’t let them get to my dog. I went out to bring in my scared and shaking dog to the safety of the house.
